Our Blogger community has lost a precious lady this week. The Spanish grandmother who billed herself as the “world’s oldest internet blogger” has died at the age of 97.
María Amelia López Soliño died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 6 a.m.
Maria Amelia Lopez only began blogging from her seaside home in Galicia two years ago.
Her postings on international affairs, Spanish politics and old age quickly turned her into a celebrity, attracting followers around the world. You can view her blog Here.

Angels and Demons / The Soloist

Over the weekend the Mrs. And I got to see two of the latest movies which I had been looking forward to seeing, namely Angels and Demons and The Soloist. Both were great movies but I particularly liked The Soloist since it was based on the true story .

Angels and Demons
Angels & Demons is a 2009 American film adaptation of Dan Brown's novel of the same name, released on May 15, 2009. It is the sequel to The Da Vinci Code, another Brown film adaptation, although the novel Angels & Demons was published and takes place before the novel The Da Vinci Code. Filming took place in Rome and the Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles. Tom Hanks reprises the lead role of Robert Langdon, while director Ron Howard, producer Brian Grazer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman also returned.

Obviously it is a controversial movie especially for Catholics and especially since Dan Brown likes to weave fiction with fact. It did net $48 million in the United States and Canada over the opening weekend. One thing that is definitely true deals with the Hadron Collider. This massive instrument does exist in France and it did go online on September 11, 2008 and they do have a public website for those with a scientific bend. There are controversies among scientist regarding this massive instrument who’s sole purpose is to create small Black Holes for research. Some feel this experiment can get out of control. The Soloist
The Soloist is an 2009 drama film starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey Jr.. It was directed by Joe Wright based on a screenplay written by Susannah Grant. The film is based on a true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a musician who becomes schizophrenic and homeless.

Jamie Foxx portrays Nathaniel Ayers, who is considered a cello prodigy, and Robert Downey Jr. portrays Steve Lopez, a Los Angeles Times columnist who discovers Ayers and writes about him in the newspaper. Production of the film began in January 2008 and was filmed mostly in Los Angeles, with some scenes shot in Cleveland. The film was released on April 24, 2009
The Soloist is based on the true story of Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), a musical prodigy who developed schizophrenia during his second year at Juilliard School. Ayers becomes homeless in the streets of downtown Los Angeles, playing the violin and the cello.
Both movies are well worth watching.

NEWS ALERT FOR NEW YORKERS ONLY

Because of a recent scare and freak out for some here in NYC when a plane flew too low for comfort and nobody knew why, I just received this advisory from my job and I wanted to share with you:
NYPD provided information regarding a military aircraft flyover that will occur on May 20, 2009 at 11:45 A.M. The flyover is part of the Fleet Week festivities and will include four military planes flying over New York City at a low altitude.

At approximately 11:45 A.M., four F-18 Hornets will pass over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge at an altitude of 2000 feet. The aircrafts will then turn and follow the Hudson River north over the assembled fleet while decreasing their altitude to 1000 feet. When the F-18s reach Pier 90, they will climb to 2500 feet and higher, exiting New York City airspace over the George Washington Bridge.

Today I got a newsletter from Arte y Vida Chicago in which I saw the work of Carlos Barberena de la Rocha and thought that I should put some information here and a couple of links. Hope everyone enjoys his work.

Carlos Barberena de la Rocha

Carlos Barberena de la Rocha was born in the city of Granada, Nicaragua in 1972, (the same year as the Managua earthquake). He was born into a family of artists, as the son of Myriam de la Rocha Silva (b.1938) and Roberto Barberena Ruiz (1938-1972), who unfortunately died in an accident when Carlos was only six months of age. Myriam was descended from a family of artists, of special note were the great portrait artist of the XIX century, Segundo de la Rocha and Lic. Juan Eligio de la Rocha, who discovered and saved the indigenous traditional oral theatrical work El Güegüense , now a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. Roberto was a great lover of art and dedicated his free time to writing poetry, painting with watercolors and playing the guitar.

The work of Carlos Barberena has been exhibited in numerous arts festivals, biennales of art as well as in museums and galleries throughout Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Spain, United States of America, Mexico, Domincan Republic and Venezuela. His artistic work has been published in almanacs and Christmas cards benefiting Costa Rican children. He has also participated in art auctions benefiting Nicaraguan children. He has received various awards, most notably the award- poster for the Ecology and Human Rights in Banana Plantations in Costa Rica, given by GEBANA in Berlin, Germany.

Here are some rather disturbing figures regarding Latino unemployment , like if we haven’t figured this one out!!!
Since the recession began in December 2007, Latino unemployment has risen 4.7 percentage points, to 10.9 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Black unemployment has risen 4.5 points, to 13.5 percent. White unemployment has risen 2.9 points, to 7.3 percent.

Here is a little stage news for a change. Every Boricua remembers West Side Story well there is a theatrical revival going on in New York. Here is an article by Malcom Johnson that is worth reading:

NEW YORK — Anyone who witnessed the original production is likely to feel a wrenching nostalgia watching the vivid if flawed revival of "West Side Story."

Drawn from "Romeo and Juliet" and pitting a white gang against Puerto Ricans in New York in the summer of 1957, the production that opened Thursday night at the Palace Theatre has been widely celebrated for its use of Spanish in songs and dialogue. The idea may be a good one, but it has been poorly handled.

Those of you who are lucky enough to be living there might hop on over and check it out.

What caused the recession in Puerto Rico?

Many would argue that the partial closing of the government due to a budget crisis was in part the impetus that plunged us into a recession. I would say that that is partly true. We were already on the road to a recession due to the two wars which began after 911. That in fact had a snow-balling effect on everything else here on the island as well as in other countries throughout the world. For now I will focus on Puerto Rico.

One of the first things to be affected was the price hikes in all areas. Everything started going up. First the gasoline which in turn caused higher prices in transported goods, which in turn caused higher production cost, etc., etc.

Next came the increase in basic services such as water and electricity. The electricity saw the largest increase in that it rose 150% if not more. One might say that that is a little high but bear in mind that businesses pay a different rate so their electric bill went up even higher. Now you begin to see the snowballing effect.

Next came the implementation of the infamous IVU better known as a sales tax. For the most part Puerto Rico had never had a sales tax on the consumer level. This caused an economic shock wave throughout the island. I can attest to this personally from an artisans perspective as for the first time many would have to register with the government and become in effect an extension of the government in the role of sales tax collectors. The government then instituted a policing force to check on all artisans and vendors to make sure they had their permits. This imposed hardships for many and many simply shut down their small businesses. One has to bear in mind that many of these individuals were on the economic fringes of society and were in fact just scraping together a living .

Long before the two wars began the industrial incentive law was scrapped. This law, which the industrial sector fought to keep gave businesses a ten year tax break during which they did not have to pay certain taxes. Once that shelter was gone so too did the businesses go. I recall that one businessman once told me that another way that many businesses had of getting around the ten year period was simply to change the company name and start all over again. I cannot attest to this since I have no idea as to how true it might be but it sounds right.

Another factor that influenced the departure of many businesses was foreign labor, in particularly cheap foreign labor! Why pay $6.00 to produce something when you can pay $1.00 or less elsewhere? Little by little businesses started leaving the island for Middle Eastern or Far Eastern countries. Many who lived here will recall that many unscrupulous companies simply packed up over-night and left without a word to their employees. Whole communities were left without livelihoods or compensation since many of these companies did not pay any sort of severance pay or compensation of any sort and I would not put it past them if they did not pay any social security either.

Puerto Rico had once been a lucrative place to do business in part because of its tax incentives, its cheap labor and its relationship as a commonwealth of the U.S. Now those things have changed. Those juicy tax incentives are gone. The cheap labor market has shifted to the Middle and Far East where one could get a laborer to work for half a buck.

I believe that one of the biggest problems here on the island is that there are politicians who put their interest before those of the island.
If you look around you will be astonished at the degree of land development that is currently taking place. The building of whole communities at exorbitant prices that the average Puerto Rican cannot afford. I am talking of homes in the $450,000.00+ category! I ask myself many times who are these communities being built for? Obviously it is not for the average Puerto Rican! Then for whom? Have the politicians instituted some get rich quick scheme that the people are unaware of? What of the land? At the rate in which these developers are going they will have covered the island in cement in less than a couple of decades, then what?

There are a number in the incoming new administration who say that our economy is better than that of the U.S. If that is so then it is news to us all. How is it possible since a large portion of our economy is dependent on the U.S.? I am looking at the situation from the trenches, on the street level and I see no such thing. On the contrary, I see things getting worse on a daily basis. I see the elderly who must leave many things behind on the supermarket counters because they no longer have enough to live on. I see people getting deeper and deeper into debt simply to survive. So if the economy is that much better than in the U.S. I would like to know where because obviously it is not seen from the peoples point of view.

Somewhere along the past eight years the concept of the three most famous opening words of the Constitution of The United States has been lost and rewritten to We The Government.

The People have been submitted to the biggest Royal Screwing by a Non-Monarch Government in recorded history!

We have had two wars crammed down our throat’s.
We have been lied to repeatedly and yet no impeachment was ever forthcoming. One lie was enough for previous presidents.

Over 4,100 soldiers have died in those two wars to avenge the deaths of 911 by 19 terrorist, not a country, but 19 individuals, Fifteen of which were from Saudi Arabia. You will note that Saudi Arabia was never on the attack list!

Because of the profiteering by Big Business especially Big Oil obviously in collusion with the Government, our once strong nation has been reduced to a Pauper Nation that has effectively lost its status among the world powers and may very well be on the brink of collapse.

Because of the profiteering along with fraud thousands have lost their jobs, their homes, their medical coverage and a few have lost their lives, while the CEO‘s of many of the Big Corporations go off on lavish, expensive junkets and got millions in bonuses as their reward.

Somewhere along the line the current administration and its cronies have lost sight of the concept of “ We The People”.

The nation cannot bear another four years of the same. To do so would mark its demise. As is we are on the brink of an Economic Depression which I foresaw more than a year ago and have been warning against.

Now there are many economist who are sounding the panic button about the Great Bailout Plan which they feel will not work. I must agree with them. More so now that they are asking for yet another Bailout Package! And the World is Watching.

We cannot and must not permit this to continue.
We The People must be brought back into the Government Vision!!!
“We The People” must take priority over “We The Government“.
And the clock is Ticking!

She attended the Steven Kidd class at the Art Students League of New York during the mid to late 70’s where I was also enrolled. She had also worked at the League’s art supply store on the first floor.

I recall having spotted her one time on an American Airlines flight to Puerto Rico back during the mid 80’s if memory serves me correct. I had just gotten a glimpse of her while everyone was getting off the jet and because of the noise and distance was un-able to speak with her.

Does Anyone Know Enrique Emmanuelli?

To all my readers especially in the New York area:

A relative of mine asked if I could help her make contact with her brother with whom she has lost contact. They lost contact due to the various moves they had both undergone. Enrique would be 67 years old now. He worked as a Diesel Mechanic in Long Island City, New York and built motorcycles. He has two daughters and a son. He had moved to Puerto Rico at one time but my sister-and-law is not sure if he is still on the island or has moved back to the states.

Puerto Rican Cop Gets 109 years for killing Civilian

This case has been watched very closely by the Puerto Ricans on the island and in the states. Today the final chapter was closed when the judge sentenced Javier Pagán Cruz to 99 years on charges of murder and 10 years on weapons charges. Read more here: The Last Caribbean Bohemian Artist.
Many will remember this case since it was flashed across the internet because the cop was caught in the act by a bystander on video. This video ended up on YouTube and was seen worldwide.

Puerto Rican Poet/Writer Piri Thomas Suffers Stroke

Puerto Rican poet and writer, Piri Thomas, best known for his depiction of barrio survival in Down These Mean Streets, suffered a stroke.

The 79 year old author is recovering in his now home of California.
Capicu Poetry is compiling email and audio messages to send to the poet, to serve as a source of strength for Piri, since he has been a source of strength to countless Latinos (and others).

Down These Mean Streets is the autobiography of Piri Thomas, a Latino of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent who grew up in El Barrio (aka Spanish Harlem), a section of Harlem that has a large Puerto Rican population. In the book, we watch Piri as he goes through the first few decades of his life, lives in poverty, joins and fights with street gangs, faces racism (in both New York and the South), suffers through heroin addiction, gets involved in crime, and ends up in prison.
Down These Mean Streets reads similarly to The Autobiography of Malcolm X in that both books are vivid, brutally honest memoirs of experiences of racial prejudice and discrimination, identity formation, and youthful involvement with crime that leads to life-altering prison experiences. One of the major themes of Down These Mean Streets centers on Piri Thomas's identity as a dark-complected Afro-Latino. Although he is of Puerto Rican and Cuban heritage, the larger American society takes him for African-American and fails to recognize him as Latino. His own family rejects the African aspect of their Latin-Caribbean ancestry, causing Piri to spend much of his adolescent and early adult life contemplating his racial and ethnic identity.
Down These Mean Streets has either been banned or has risked banning attempts in Salinas, CA; Teaneck, NJ; Darien, CT; District 25 in Queens, NYC, NY; and in Long Island, NY.
The book was originally published in 1967, and later republished in a special Thirtieth Anniversary Edition in 1997, with a new afterword from the author. A sequel was made, called 7 Long Times, which gives more depth to his prison years.

Has anyone given any attention to Hillary’s claims of Dodging Snipers in Bosnia, as a way of emphasizing her experience to be the president and manage military affairs? You might want to check around on the net today in particularly the Fact Checker at the Washington Post.

Here is what she said:

"I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."

Jeremiah Wright - Hillary Clinton ain't never been called...

Up to this time I have been in favor of Barack Obama. Up to this time then last night I saw the interview conducted by Anderson Cooper where Obama was trying to distance himself from the frenzy over the sermon of Jeremiah Wright. Everybody has seen the edited version of that video. I am certain that it has probably been viewed world wide.

Now, here is the thing. I saw that video, as have the majority of those living in the U.S. and I could not find it to be offensive or untruthful ( except for the 911 comment that does not appear in the video ). Any ethnic, especially blacks know that everything that Jeremiah Wright said about the black mans plight was true! Deep down inside Obama knows that this is true. But what does he do? He now tries to distance himself from all of it!
Well, when I saw that on Anderson Cooper last night my views on Obama changed. Jeremiah Wright spoke the truth of the black mans ( and other ethnics ) plight in the U.S. not the ideological rhetoric of a politician! He spoke the Reality of the ethnic experience in the U.S. not the ideological American Dream story!

The more I heard Obama speak the more I realized that this is a man I cannot back or trust. Up until last night he had my vote but now, that has changed. How can anyone trust an individual who tries to distance himself from something that every ethnic living in the U.S. knows is true! Political rhetoric to save his butt during a presidential campaign? Even less reason to be trusted.

Obama, if you ask me you blew it Kiddo! There are a lot of blacks and ethnics out there that are probably thinking the same thing I just expressed. I suspect that the Anderson Cooper interview ( aired March 14, 2008 ) is going to cost Obama dearly!

Note: I tried finding the video of that interview but was unable to find it anywhere. Does anyone know where I can find it?

I listened to the speech and all of the eloquent words and the little story and I come away asking this," Is he talking truth and reality or is this more Political, patriotic idealism, that has been spewed out for the past 300 years at election time? "

Don't get me wrong, I am not an advocate of hate but neither am I some naive idiot as to what we must confront on a regular basis in the" Mean " streets of our cities.
Jeremiah Wright spoke truthfully of the black mans plight, which in essence is the reality of all ethnics in the U.S.

My wife told me that Obama has to say these things in order to continue his race for the presidency. Well, if that is the case then it's politics not truth and reality. I would rather deal with a man who will call me Spik to my face than one with eloquent speech's and pat's on the back. At least I know where the first one is coming from, I would not be able to trust the second!

But who am I except a lowly man on the streets in a pre-depression era!

Does Anyone Know Norca Torres?

When I knew her Norca Torres lived on Rockaway Ave just off the corner of Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn, New York. This was back around the mid 60’s. She had 2 brothers, one was Raymond and the other was Walter. Her step-father was partners with a Jewish fellow in a clothing store on Broadway just a bit west of Rockaway under the J train.

Norca had married a guy named Winston, don’t recall the last name, which is the guy the family felt she should marry.

Sometime around the late 60’s the family had moved to a large house just south west of Highland Park. I remember having been there once or twice before I went to the service. Upon my return I married and lost track of Norca and her family as well as a number of other friends.

A number of years ago my brother ran into her, don’t remember if it was in Brooklyn or Queens. He found out that she had been divorced from Winston. That was the last I ever heard of her.

If anyone reading this post knows of her or knows her please direct her to this blog so we may re-establish contact. Tell her Robert, Walter’s old friend is trying to re-establish contact with her.

The Tragedy of Doña Adolfina Villanueva

While discussing the matter of Paseo Caribe my wife told me the story of a woman whom I had not heard of. Her name was Adolfina Villanueva who lived in Mediania Alta, which I understand is in Loiza. What my wife recounted about what took place on February 6 1980 with this woman shocked me and the fact that nothing was ever done shocked me even more. What really got me was the fact that when I tried to find out the story regarding Doña Adolfina I had problems on the internet accessing any files about her! It was only when I included the word “Eviction” in Spanish that I finally got a page on Google with the story about her.

It is a very sobering story indeed about a grave injustice which to this day has not been corrected. The story has many parallels with what is currently going on in Paseo Caribe and the People!

While attending to matters on my other blog, The Last Caribbean Bohemian Artist I noticed that someone had been spending a lot of time going through the images. I was curious so I did a little back-tracking which took me to the Yahoo search engine page who's search term was: PUERTORICANS SOLDIERS TODAYS.

Obviously someone was doing some research regarding Puerto Ricans involved in the military and since I do put material about Puerto Rican soldiers on that site and the site was listed on the search page I didn't think nothing strange about. Then my eyes landed on something that caught my attention. One section below my site entry there was an entry for The Borinqueneers. I clicked on it and landed on the website of The Borinqueners.

I had never heard of them so I did a bit of reading and suddenly realized that they were talking about the famed 65th Infantry of Puerto Rico. This unit I had heard of though to say the truth knew very little about them about from the fact they they were involved in the Korean War, also known as the Korean Conflict and the Forgotten War. This site advertised the documentary about The Borinqueneers which would seem was aired this past August on PBS. On a hunch I typed in the information on my YouTube account and sure enough there was a trailer about the video.

Many Puerto Ricans, including myself, do not really know very much about the 65th Infantry apart from the fact that it was an Army unit and is the name given to a main highway here on the island. Even less known is the fact that 162 of their members were court martialed .

In December 1954, 162 Puerto Ricans of the 65th Infantry were arrested, 95 were court martialed, and 91 were found guilty and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 1 to 18 years of hard labor. It was the largest mass court martial of the Korean War. The Secretary of the Army Robert Stevens moved quickly to remit the sentences and granted clemency and pardons to all those involved.

Though I don't have a copy of The Borinqueneers, the trailer below shows that it is an important documentary that all Puerto Ricans should watch.

Soldiers Asked to Return Bonus for Being WIA?

Beware I say, Beware! There are things going on with returning wounded vets that are not being said and all those thinking of signing up to get that bonus I say this, BEWARE. According to the information I got tonight, and I don’t have it all, a veteran who was blinded while serving in Iraq and was honorably discharge was sent a bill ( not sure if it was the Pentagon or Army ) to the tune of close to $3,000.00!
Why you may ask. Very simple, a breach of contract ( or so they say ). This soldier, through no fault of his own gets wounded, he ends up blind ( not certain if it was one eye or both ) , is shipped back the honorably discharged after which he is sent a bill to pay back the bonus money. I am deliberately not mentioning any names because I am writing this as a human being and in no way as any sort of reporter.

I guess anyone with a 9th grade education can see the problem. I wonder if the recruiters mentioned any of this prior to the guy signing away his life! Since mine is a blog that deals with Latin issues I begin to wonder how many Latin’s have gone through this experience and repaid the bonus rather than rightfully take it to court to fight it. It’s funny but during the report I saw on CNN not once did I hear mention of court. I heard about the issue going before the soldiers congressman but no mention of court. Another funny thing about this report is that they stated that this first surfaced back in June or July! I get the impression it has been going on a lot longer than that.

A number of bloggers are not using as civil a tongue as I am regarding this issue. There is actually Fire and Brimstone coming out of some of those sites and rightfully so. Then they have the nerve to bitch about how their recruitment quota’s are not being met!

I bring up this whole issue here because I know there are many young Latin men out there thinking about signing up ( since there are so few options for many Latin’s ) so they can hopefully get those so called bonuses to try and make a stab at things and maybe, just maybe get ahead. I would strongly suggest you re-think the whole idea! I had always been of the observation that these recruiters would lie to their own mothers to get them to sign on the dotted line and meet their quota

FBI Reviewing Anti-Jena 6 Web Page

Since I got involved with this story yesterday after hearing of it on the news I have done some quick catching up.
I visited the website mentioned in the video below and found that the names were not there. Maybe they had been taken down by the time I showed up. However, I did some checking and did find a White Supremacist site which had been mentioned in the news report where the purported list was in fact posted! I will not publish the name of the site here. Such irresponsibility should not be perpetuated.
Needless to say the authorities at Jena, La., are taking the threats seriously enough to increase the patrols in and around Jena. Calls of a derogatory nature have been made and even the white student who had been beaten has received threatening calls. Currently the FBI is reviewing the anti-Jena 6 web page. Extra patrols began several days ago, LaSalle Parish Sheriff Carl Smith said.
Needles to say there has been much outrage both in the community and the nation over this deplorable incident.
